The Perfect Wall Design
Step 1: Choosing Gypsum Over POP or Plywood
Our design uses gypsum, which is affordable, easy to install, and gives a high-quality finish. While POP and plywood are alternatives, POP can be messy and plywood heavy and costly. Gypsum, however, strikes the perfect balance, especially for intricate wall designs.
Preparation Tips:
- Before starting, mark the entire wall using a pencil to outline where each element will go. This prevents mistakes that often occur when workers improvise, leading to inconsistent results.
- Create a gypsum frame 6 inches from the wall to accommodate cove lights, which add that extra wow factor. This space ensures that even after installing the gypsum sheets, you have enough room for lighting without compromising the design.
Step 2: Installing Gypsum Sheets
- Use high-quality gypsum sheets, at least 12mm thick, to ensure durability.
- Make sure the sheets are perfectly level when installed. If a contractor tells you minor imperfections can be fixed with paint, don’t be fooled! Misalignments may cause cracks in the future.
Step 3: Finishing with Precision
Once your gypsum sheets are up, it’s time to address the joints:
- Fill all screw holes and seams with POP for a seamless look. Avoid using regular putty as it doesn’t bond well with gypsum.
- Apply masking tape over joints before adding a layer of POP. This step is crucial for a uniform surface.
- Sand the wall using 320-grit sandpaper. Gypsum boards are naturally smooth, so this fine grit ensures a polished finish without causing damage.
Step 4: The Magic of PU Stone Panels
For that elegant stone effect, we chose PU stone panels, which mimic the look of natural stone but are lightweight and easy to install. PU (Polyurethane) is strong yet flexible, perfect for interior designs.
Panel Options:
- These panels come in a limited variety of colours but can be custom-painted. If you prefer a personalised look, opt for white panels and paint them.
- Available sizes include 2×4 ft and 4×8 ft, with costs ranging from ₹150 to ₹300 per sq. ft.
Installing PU Stone Panels:
- Use silicone adhesive to secure the panels. Simply apply silicone generously on the back and press the panels onto the wall. Make sure the panels are level, as once they dry, they can’t be adjusted without damage.
- Let the silicone dry for 8-10 hours for a firm hold.
Step 5: The Final Touch—Painting
Once your wall is ready, it’s time to paint! A professional painter will apply two coats of acrylic putty, sanding between coats for a flawless finish. Remember to use 320-grit sandpaper to maintain the smoothness of the gypsum.
Cost Breakdown
Here’s a rough estimate for a 60 sq. ft. wall:
- Gypsum installation: ₹12,000
- PU stone panels: ₹15,000
- Silicone adhesive: ₹1,000
- Painter’s charges: ₹8,000, plus ₹2,000 for paint
- Total: Around ₹38,000
